SANDVELD NATURE RESERVE

North-west of Bloemfontein at the confluence of the Vet and Vaal rivers along the southern bank of the Bloemhof Dam one finds the Sandveld Nature Reserve. Along with the Willem Pretorius and Tussen-die-Riviere reserves, Sandveld is considered as one of the three main provincial reserves in the Free State. The dam covers some 25 000ha while the reserve itself adds on a further 14 700ha.

Vegetation consists of Kalahari thornveld, characterised by camel thorn trees and sweet grassland. Numerous game species were introduced, including springbok, roan, sable, giraffe, eland, gemsbok, red hartebeest, blue wildebeest, white rhinoceros and buffalo. Smaller creatures such as the antbear, aardwolf, porcupine, duiker, steenbok and springhare also make for interesting game viewing.

Birdlife abounds in the various habitats found on the reserve. Aquatic species such as egrets, cormorants, geese, ducks and flamingoes gather in great flocks at the dam, which is also a perfect spot for fishing (licence required) and boating. Keen birders should also keep an eye open for thornveld species like pygmy falcon, sociable weaver, whitebacked vulture, yellow-billed and grey hornbill, and crimson-breasted and long-tailed shrike.

The reserve has a neat caravan park with electricity and ablution blocks as well as a camping site with basic ablution facilities. Alternatively, visitors can rent holiday chalets with air-conditioning. Other facilities include a small shop as well as a hall and a furnished lapa which can be rented for functions. The reserve is open throughout the year. Opening time: 06h00 to 21h00.

How to get there:
From Bloemfontein take the R700 towards Hoopstad via Bultfontein. Continue along R34 towards Bloemhof. Watch out for signposts on the left, just before the bridge.
